Size:
The black pine initially grows regularly and broadly conical up to 25 m tall.

Leaf: 
The needles are always in pairs on a short shoot and grow to 8-15 cm long. They hardly rot on the ground, so that ground vegetation is suppressed.

Flower/fruit: 
The winged seeds do not ripen until autumn of the second year and fall out in dry weather in spring. The brown cones grow up to 8 cm long.

Wood: 
Black pines provide durable, soft, light and elastic wood that is also very durable in water. Because beams made of pine creak under too much strain, the wood was in demand as pit timber in the Minette. The resin provides turpentine and rosin (violin resin).

Trivia/Use: 
The black pine prefers warm and dry locations. It used to be planted on the "Aarnescht" in Niederanven because it was the only tree species there that yielded enough.
