Size:
The field maple is a rather small-crowned tree that reaches up to 15 m in height. On poor soils it grows rather shrubby.

Leaf:
The leaf is usually five-lobed and turns a bright yellow in autumn.

Flower/Fruit:
The field maple blooms in May in small yellow-green umbels (bee pasture). Its fruits are the paired winged nutlets typical of maple, which remain on the tree until winter.

Wood:
Field maple yields a firm and tough reddish wood, making it particularly suitable for axe handles and popular in woodturning and woodcarving.

Trivia/Use:
The field maple is very adaptable and robust. Therefore it is often used for slope stabilization, but also as a street and avenue tree. Because it is so tolerant of pruning, it is also suitable for hedges and forest edges.
