Size:
In our latitudes, the sequoia grows up to 35 m tall and is conical with a straight trunk. In its native North America it reaches heights of up to 100 m and trunks up to 13 m thick, at an age of 1000 to 2500 years.

Leaf: 
The evergreen needles are only about 5 mm long, blue-green and screwy, attached to the twig like scales.

Flower/fruit: 
The flower is inconspicuous. The relatively small, reddish-brown cones are ovoid.

Wood: 
The redwood has a reddish-brown heartwood (redwood) that is durable. Its sapwood contrasts yellow with the heartwood. In the knot area the wood becomes slightly brittle and susceptible to breakage. The thick, reddish-brown, fibrous bark protects the trees from forest fires.

Trivia/Use: 
In the Amalie Park in Luxembourg stand the two oldest sequoia trees in Luxembourg, they are around 130 years old. They have a height of 27 and 32 m (Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle, 2002). The "General Sherman Tree" in Sequoia National Park in California is considered the largest tree in the world.
