Large-leaved Lime

Size:
The large-leaved lime grows up to 30 m tall and is thus somewhat inferior to the large-leaved lime. Both limes can live for more than 1000 years.

Leaf
The large-leaved lime has a rounded, heart-shaped leaf, smaller than that of the large-leaved lime. Reddish-brown axillary beards can be seen in the axils of the leaf veins.

Flower/Fruit
The large-leaved lime is one of the few native summer-flowering trees, the flowering indicates the beginning of midsummer. The yellow umbels are pleasantly fragrant. The fruit of the large-leaved lime is harder than that of the large-leaved lime. It is difficult to crush.

Wood
As the wood of the large-leaved lime is very soft, it makes the best wood for carving. The calorific value is only low. The bast of the bark used to be used for wickerwork, rope and binding.

Trivia/Use
The large-leaved lime is generally less demanding than the large-leaved lime, but tolerates urban climates (exhaust fumes) just as badly as the latter. However, it is considered a storm-resistant avenue tree and a suitable woodland copse. Over the centuries, lime trees were considered typical trees of village squares and courtyards. Their late flowering in summer is particularly important for bees and other hymenoptera.
