Handkerchief Tree
Size:
The Davidia is a small to medium sized tree, reaching up to 10 (15) m in height.
Leaf:
The leaves are deciduous, broadly heart-shaped and fall late with no special autumn colouring.
Flower/fruit:
The Davidia is a picturesque, decorative flowering tree, but it is not a native woody plant (origin Western China). Its actual flowers are inconspicuous in small heads. They are conspicuous by the so-called bracts, 10 to 15 cm in size. They are
white, uneven and hang on the flowers like a handkerchief. Unfortunately, the Davidia blooms late, from the 8th year of stand. The globular fruits are brown and long-stalked.
Trivia/Use:
The irregular crown is conspicuous in old age, when the branches spread wide almost horizontally. Young trees prefer a warm and sheltered location, are very sensitive to frost, with age they become more resistant.
