Size:
Walnut trees are stately trees up to 30 m tall, with a broad spreading crown. They grow quite quickly when young and can live up to 200 years; grafted specimens live far less.

Leaf
The pinnate leaves grow up to 40 cm in size with 5 - 9 leaflets and smell aromatic. The walnut sprouts very late in spring. The decomposing foliage releases a substance that has a growth-inhibiting effect on other plants.

Flower/Fruit
The male flowers appear in April/May in long catkins, the female flowers are rather inconspicuous. The nutritious walnuts are a must on any Christmas platter. Until they ripen, they are enclosed in a thick, green-fleshed shell on the tree, which bursts open in September to reveal the woody nut.

Wood
Walnut wood is one of the most valuable woods because it is quite hard and durable. Its dark grain is unmistakable.
Selected furniture, veneers, parquet and turnery are made from walnut. Often the entire rootstock of the tree is also dug out to obtain sought-after burl wood.

Trivia/Use
The walnut is found here as a solitary tree, in orchards and in the courtyards of farms. It grows autochthonously in damp mountain gorge forests, e.g. in the Himalayas.
