Size:
The downy birch grows up to 20 m high and sometimes also grows shrub-like and multi-stemmed.
Leaf:
The leaf is usually broadly ovate, but can also be very variable. The underside of the leaf and the petiole of the downy birch are covered with downy hairs, as are the young twigs. The autumn colouring of the leaves is yellow-orange.
Flower/Fruit:
The yellow catkins appear with the leaf shoots, about end of April - April May.
Wood:
Birch wood is not very hard, but tough and elastic. The cabinet makers appreciate it because of its grain.
Trivia/Use:
Downy birch grows on permanent soils, at the edge of bogs or in intermediate and lowland bogs. Downy birch forests are very rare habitats worthy of special protection.
