Size:
The silver poplar can grow up to 30 m high, but only makes short trunks with a mighty crown.

Leaf:
The leaf is roundish and palmately lobed. The white felty underside of the leaf is conspicuous.

Flower/Fruit:
Silver poplar produces female and male trees. The pendulous catkins of both sexes appear yellow-green before the leaves shoot in March-April. The very short-lived small seeds ripen in May/June.

Wood:
The wood is white and harder than that of other poplar species, but only of low durability. It is used for the production of paper, wood wool or fibreboard.

Trivia/Use:
Because silver poplar is so fast-growing and produces abundant root fry, it is used in engineering biology to fortify dunes. However, it should not be planted near fields and meadows because of the strong root growth.
