Platan
Size:
The sycamore is a mighty tree up to over 30 m with a wide spreading crown. The bark is yellow to grey and peels off in large plates in spring.
Leaf:
The large leaf of the plane tree is 3 to 5-lobed and resembles the Norway maple (see name). In autumn it turns yellow.
Flower/Fruit:
From the inconspicuous flowers in May, pendulous, spherical fruits grow on long stems, which can remain on the tree until the following spring.
Wood:
The hard reddish wood is used in furniture making and veneer production.
Trivia/Use:
The plane tree is absolutely insensitive to city and street climates and also tolerates road salt. It is also very tolerant of pruning, as shown by the many promenade and avenue plane trees, e.g. in France.
